The existing house sits at the top of a gully and turns its back on the sun. The addition steps down the slope on a steel portal so the living rooms face north over the trees.

We started from a measured survey of the existing house, because the 1950s drawings were not reliable. The survey against the base drawings is below: most walls are within 10 mm, two are not.

Detailed design is under way. The consent pre-check has flagged two things for the architect to look at before the set is lodged.

Kept for the next project

  • Measure the existing house before concept design. Two walls were out by more than 20 mm against the old drawings.
  • Bring the geotechnical engineer to the first site visit on a steep site, not after concept.
  • Show the client the section through the gully early; it explained the steel portal better than any plan.
