The brief asked for a quiet room that a small trust could run with one staff member. We kept it to one volume: a reading room with the services in a thin band along the east side, so a single person at the desk can see every seat.

The roof is cross-laminated timber on three glulam frames on grids A to D. It lifts to the north so the clerestory brings in winter sun and keeps out the summer sun under a deep eave. The slab is exposed and carries the heat into the evening.

Twelve months of metered data now sit against the energy target from the design stage. Most months are under target; winter heating ran over in the first July while the controls were tuned.

Kept for the next project

  • Commission the heating controls through a full winter month before handover, not at handover.
  • The deep north eave works: no blinds were needed on the clerestory in the first summer.
  • Leave the exposed slab unsealed for six weeks before the finish coat; the first coat lifted in two bays.
  • One staff member can run the room because the desk sees every seat. Keep the sightline in any change.
